Rev. T. R. Thayer was an ordained elder of Free Methodists' Genesee Conference since his first "pastorate" at W. Kendall, N. Y. (Orleans County) in 1929. As Historian, he faithfully attended Annual Conferences; was Statistical Secretary, & involved in Cattaraugus Camp, & Barker, NY (Lighthouse Camp) on Lake Ontario. A Bible/Book Store was established from his  "cottage' on the grounds. Rev. Thayer's ministry & heritage is  traced for 16 generations from his Anglo-Saxon [in Braintree, England] to Braintree, Massachusetts. 
     The TFA Quarterly, Spring 1998 issue, Page 6 article* reported that Rev. T.R. Thayer is a direct descendant of George Washington Thayer and Martha Clemons on  the Thomas lineage of early 1500’s!

6885 SW 161 Place, Beaverton, Oregon 97007 - 6336. We honor our forefathers especially those memorialized and are buried in Ledge Lawn Cemetery, on Rte. 5 between Clarence and Akron, NY.  Parents, and most grand parents: Geo. Edwin & Nellie Thayer,& Grace's  mother, Estella Barringer. But her father, Pearl Victor Barringer's grave is at Portland, OH  near the Ohio River "boot" and West Virginia state line.
 

George was an  approved  "exhorter" with Free
Methodist denomination; rec'd.  'local  preacher's
license in l950; Drafted in the Fall, l951while in his
senior year at  ROBERTS WESLEYAN COLLEGE.
     He was  acclaimed:  "Serviceman  of  the Year"
by Free Meth. active in The Christian Youth at
Camp LeJeune, N. Carolina,  establishing  the 1st
Jacksonville Servicemen's   Ctr.; a Chaplain's
Assistant, while being  Operations & Intelligence
Non Commissioned Officer of the  Marine Ground
GroundControlSquadron-7; of2nd MarineAirWing.
With the rank of  SSGT. George returned to WNY.
Began "Ministering"  at Forestville  while his "dad"
was at Cattaraugus.  When  offered opportunity to
Asbury Theological  Seminary, from his 'active
service of less than 2 years,+  resolving 6 yr. reserves to continue pastoring, George assisted
withconstruction & programming of   AM Radio.
WNYS-Now WGGO,1590, in  Salamanca;  Moved to
Hornell,NY with his wife, AlfredaMae (nee-Gates);
Pastored 2 Rural  Meth. churches at Stephen's Mills& Big Creek;  Worked at WLEA& WWHG Am-FM
Then Moved to a 3 church "parish"  near Wellsboro, PA while  attending   Alfred University's school of Theology until it closed in l962. The par- sonage at Kenneyville; Little Marsh & Niles Valley while also programming  at WNBT 1490AM.  In l962 Geo.  was 'offered' a 5 Methodist " Charge"  in Fulton County; west  of Chambersburg, PA. & moved  to  Burnt Cabins, with 4  churches at: Fort Littleton; Knobsville, Fannettsburg, & Metal.  The
family  returned to Salamanca area. 


 

















 

Thurber Reuben Thayer 
                   
[l903 - 1997]
 
was born on August 29, 1903,  at the 'family  homestead'  on  the Indian Falls Rd ., in  Newstead  Twp., east of the village of Akron, (Erie Co., N .Y. 14001).
   About 6 months later, his parents, George Edwin &  Nellie Zelona [ nee Perkins]
Thayer moved to what is called "Thayer  Homestead" at 13083 Knapp Rd.  Building the home in 1902 & other barns was a Mr. Knapp for whom the road later named.  His  place is located further east  near the Genesee County line.
 
  The 200+ Acre farm, now owned by Robert Allen Thayer of Rochester, NY.,  at one time or another, the residence of the elder Thayer’s 3 children, some grandchildren, and great grandchildren of George A., Virginia Mae {Harter}, of  Can- isteo,NY and Ruth Lenora, [Gimbrone/ Marzolf],   of  ZephyrHills,  FL. Grace Lenora, (Nee Barringer), as she affect- ionately called "TR", & Thurber were  married in Chester, VA on Aug.29th, l929. T.R. graduated from Akron High School, a couple years before his only brother, Forest Reber Thayer, who moved to Scotland Rd., outside Akron, NY with his 1st wife, Gladys E. [Jerome].   TR & Grace met while  attending Chesboro Seminary, now Roberts Wesleyan College, and thence both graduated from Greenville College, IL. Mrs. Thayer was the only daughter of Pearl V. Barringer of  Portland,  OH IO. Estella Mae [Huff]  born in East Liverpool, OH   'TR' & Grace ministered in many WNY places:Ellington-E. Randolph;
Yorkshire- Mc Kinstry, Delevan;
South Dayton-Cherry Creek; 3
times in Salamanca,&  Indian- Jimertsontown "circuit"; Perry,
Warsaw Communities; Lockport,
W.Seneca;Niagara Falls & Tona- wanda; Glens Falls; Cattarau- gus-EastOtto;Rushford,Belfast;
Also supplying churches while
retired and residing at Akron.
till his wife's death in Sept. l974. Both were
substitute public school teachers, members  of
Retired; Senior Citizen's;and
TR ,the WNY Geneological Soc-  iety...He  resided with George
Allan & his wife, Joyce Eileen [nee-Cobb] till l994  when he moved to  Heritage
Village, Gerry, N.Y. until  his death.
